JOB SUMMARY
The Genetic Assistant (GA) is a member of and works in collaboration with the Regional Cancer Genetics team to ensure patients across the region of Erie St. Clair have a positive experience during all service interactions, from receipt of referral to follow-up. The GA assists Physician Leads and Genetic Counsellors with clinical and administrative tasks. This role involves patient coordination, genetic testing support, data management, and as/when applicable, contributing to research efforts within the program.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists with Regional Cancer Genetics Program clinical inquiries and care navigation.
Communicate with patients and healthcare providers to gather family histories, obtain medical records, and ensure patients are prepared for consultations.
Assist with referral screening and triage, case preparation and post-appointment activities.
Organize and prepare patient charts for genetic consults, obtain complete family histories, prepare pedigree information, retrieve appropriate medical records and other relevant information.
Responsible for data entry and database management (pedigree software tool, electronic medical record, risk assessment tools).
Organize, coordinate and track genetic testing results, out-of-country applications, medical records, physician requests and family history questionnaires.
Ensure accuracy and confidentiality of patient data in compliance with privacy regulations and hospital policies and procedures.
Provide ongoing genetics specific clinical support to the Physician Lead and Genetic Counsellors.
Assist with research studies, chart audits and other educational opportunities, if/as needed.
Contribute to the development and/or refinement of standard operating procedures and/or policies for the program, as well as participate in quality improvement initiatives, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a Community College Office Administration – Medical, diploma, with a minimum of three years related experience in a health care environment or equivalent combination of education and expertise; or
Completion of, or working towards, a Bachelor of Science in Biology or Genetics from an accredited university, or equivalent
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint), data entry, and retrieval.
Working knowledge of basic genetic principles and the genetic counselling profession.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Exceptional communication skills using both oral and written formats.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy is critical.
Demonstrated effective problem solving and analytical skills.
Self-motivator with a proven ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workload in a fast-paced clinical environment, and follow through on assignments with minimal supervision.
Experience working in a clinical setting is preferred.
Ability to communicate in the French Language would be an asset.
